Robin Completed Her Residency

Well I’m up from my nap and I seem to be feeling more relaxed, maybe relieved today. That anxious feeling in the pit of my stomach that I’ve had for years seems to be gone. Perhaps its because Robin completed her surgical residency yesterday? A long hard journey, but it is time to celebrate!!

I thought I’d write a few words on this momentous occasion to recognize just how difficult surgery residency is. Relief that it was over, and looking forward to dream jobs, was a common theme when we spoke with the three chief residents (and their parents) two weeks ago.

Graduating from BC’s pre-med program with just about all A’s was tough, and achieving very high MCAT scores was hard work. Finishing medical school Magna Cum Laude and with a junior AOA membership was grueling. But internship, followed by 4 years of surgical residency boot camp, challenges doctors in unimaginable ways. Its one of those things you just can’t explain, you have to be there. She persevered and excelled through those tough times, however, while somehow maintaining her caring and beaming personality. She now has a dream Head and Neck surgery job at Mass Eye and Ear near Boston. Mass Eye and Ear is a Harvard Medical School teaching hospital and is where she hopes to be performing very interesting surgeries (USNews rates Harvard #1 in surgery).

But enough about her. I may miss those Albany phone calls saying her internet won’t work, or the car won’t start or is buried in snow, or her apartment is flooded and wanting me to drive out 3 hours and fix it, which I happily did of course. With four daughters that went through undergrad and graduate schools, I guess I’ve had plenty of moving experiences and gratifying aid missions.

But I don’t think I’ll miss the Lexington trips to set up an apartment, and then another to pack/move her because she was exhausted and had zero time for it. I may miss the bourbon distilleries, horses, and rolling Kentucky countryside, however. Seems that in every visit I was met with a big smile, sparkling blue eyes, followed quickly by a long Dad Do List punctuated with a “nice to see you”, gotta go to work. I loved it, always had a good time. I've had great times with all my daughters... but I digress. Did I mention how hard residency is?
She started with playing with boxes and now this...……. and a new chapter begins.
