While Out Of Town

Seems we have a few gray foxes around.

The face markings and eyes of some these guys do look like grays. Then there is the stripe on the back and tail. Gray foxes used to be the most common fox in North America. However, because red foxes are better adapted to human habitation, they have become more common in the eastern United States than gray foxes. Grays are common in Southern NH, but rare north. Other foxes have slit like pupils (like cats) but gray foxes have oval-shaped pupils. Gray foxes can climb trees. Gray foxes are particularly fond of fruit and nuts/seeds. Perhaps the bird feeders are attracting them? They prefer densely forested areas, particularly rocky and brushy habitats, like at the top of the hill.
